Synopsis In 1962 Detroit, Michigan, young auto salesman Curtis Taylor Jr. meets the black girl group known as “The Dreamettes,” consisting of lead singer Effie White and backup singer Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson at an amateur R&B talent show at the Detroit Theater … presenting himself as the new manager. He recruited them as backup vocals for Chitlin’ Circuit R&B star Jimmy “Thunder” Early. Curtis soon started his own record label, Rainbow. Records from a Detroit auto dealer appointed CC as Effie’s head songwriter when their first single “Cadillac Car” failed after the white pop group “Dave and the Sweethearts” released a cut version. Curtis, CC and producer Wayne turned to payola to create “Jimmy Early & The Dreamettes” mainstream pop star. Off-stage, Effie falls in love with Curtis, while married Jimmy does the same with Laurel Marty Madison. Jimmy’s manager grows tired of Kerr’s plans. Novartis made his customers more friendly and walked away. When Jimmy drops a bomb in front of an audience at a dinner club in white Miami Beach, Curtis sends him out on the streets alone, making The Dreamettes the headlines in his place. He appointed a slimmer Deena. and more conventionally charming as the new lead singer, renaming them “The Dreams”.
